Antifragile, a concept developed by Nassim Taleb, is beyond resilience or robustness; the resilient resists shocks and stays the same, the antifragile perform better under uncertainty [fragile ↔ robust ↔ antifragile].

As the world is getting too complicated to predict (too many complex inputs that cause extreme unexpected/random outcomes) the only way to survive is to build an enterprise that can flourish under uncertainty. An antifragile enterprise is flexible and adaptive enough to perform better under uncertainty, whatever may come its way. Hence for example a simpler, lower geared business is better, having more options available is always better, teaming up and having flexible JVs is better. At Octavius we help our clients, within this framework, to redefine and restructure their businesses and portfolios to thrive over the long-term.

Part of this antifragility comes from helping our clients define and determine their unique intangible assets; assets fundamentally different from tangible assets because of what Haskel and Westlake call the “four S’s”: scalability, sunkenness, spillovers, and synergies. Knowing that one’s investment in these intangible assets are a sunk cost (difficult to recover) we help our clients implement optionality – smaller sequential decisions to match what in Silicon-Valley is termed “fail fast” – that rely on finding complementary spillovers from other seemingly unrelated fields and synergies of different technologies to yield unique solutions that can scale; scalability that can be called “test small and scale fast inexpensively”.

Regardless of the method our targeted outcome is a successful process and structure that ensures survivability and delivers financial results underpinned by economic profits; profits far in excess of their cost of capital.
